In the past few decades Ayurvedic academy, research and dissertations (BAMS, MD, PhD) are executed and monitored by national authorities with special impetus for modern updating and impractical simplifications to fit modern theories into Ayurvedic practice.
Students after completion of degree in Ayurveda both Under Graduate and Post Graduate are eligible for registration as medical practitioners under state registration councils. Their research works even though recognized in the academic councils are not explored further or get a suitable platform for applied research due to vested interests and personal agendas. It is also getting mixed up with modern updating and confusions created by the impractical simplification of core Ayurvedic concepts. Combine this with traditional or regionally misinterpreted practices and then we have a disastrous output which has led to a down gradation of the Ayurvedic System.
Upon realization of these facts, AIARD had embarked on a strict disciplined practical training program for aspiring practitioners of classical Ayurveda. For the past two and a half decades through empirical documentation of classical Ayurveda practices on the basis of clinical follow-ups a database of treatment protocol for all kinds of diseases requiring Shamana Chikitsa (internal medicine) had been created.
Classical Ayurvedic texts uniquely written in Sanskrit were selected (760 texts) for compiling data, emphasizing cause of diseases, pathogenesis, prognosis, signs & symptoms, complications, co-morbidities, deformities, treatment principles, formulations and pharmaco-therapeutics.
Translations, interpretations and documentation from Sanskrit to English are the means adopted for materializing the data by updating with modern medical parameters. Thus classical Ayurvedic parameters are revalidated and documented as per WHO norms with special reference to preserving disciplines of classical formulations like coarse herbal powders (kwatha choornam), fine powders (choornam), semi-fine powders (phantam), triturated & confectionery tablets (gutika), medicated oils and ghees (snehapakam), fermented preparations (asava & arishta.
The medicines prepared in our Institute are dispensed at OP & IP levels inside our campus.
More than 100 doctors have benefitted from across the country through continuous awareness programs and supply of medicines to treat challenging and critical illnesses.
AIARD is focusing on the following missions:
1) Revalidation of classical Ayurveda (Literary – Laboratory & clinical aspects):
Derivation and explanation on meaning of words through distinct styles of Sanskrit language (paribhasha, vyutpathi, nirukthi, Vedanta, vyakarana – ardhapathi) incorporating with Sanskrit scholars are intended to compile the data in multidisciplinary aspects. The compiled data are documented in different sections from literary, field, laboratory and clinical aspects. The data are then subjected for discussions and debate among our groups of scholars and medical practitioners for competent updations through a vedic knowledge transferring process named Thadvidya sambhasha. The final inputs are released as publications on the following subjects:
Conclusions on controversial medicinal plants
Quality control standards of raw drugs on the basis of nama rupa jnana, pharmacognosy and phytochemistry.
Diagnosis of diseases.
Treatment principles and pharmaco-theraputics (chikitsa sidhanta & prayoga vijnana)
Enlisting inputs on surveys (food toxicity, incidence of diseases).
Inputs on social & preventive aspects of classical Ayurveda.
2) Revalidation practices of vrukshayurveda (Literary and field aspects):
The ancient system on preservations and enhancing potency & clinical efficacy of plants & trees with special reference to food and medicine are individually compiled are documented with modern updations. Strict disciplines without violating the values of Vedic instructions have been preserved to conclude the topics with translations and interpretations.
3) Surveys on raw drug markets in India for documentation of quality standards (Field and laboratory aspects):
All government recognized raw drug markets of Ayurveda in India are selected and documenting substitutions and adulterations. The data are then subjected for comparative study with original drugs collected from cultivated and natural resources. Organoleptic, pharmacognostical, phytochemical and molecular markers comparisons are being performed to conclude the identity, purity and strength.
4) Documentation on original raw drug resources in India (Field & clinical aspects):
A detailed field study on original drug resources have done in national level and samples are collected for preparing formulations to distribute among patients with critical and challenging illness at our OP & IP departments. Clinical documentations on safety, efficacy, dosage and biochemical responses are compiled. Only classical formulations written in Sanskrit texts of Ayurveda have been restricted for the study as no safety study are required due to the time tested and empirical documentations through centuries.
5) Literary documentation (computerized research data component):
Text books and soft copies are intended to publish with all supportive documents. These information are shared with state and national governing bodies on academy and research departments recognized by government of India.
6) Laboratory documentations and clinical research (Laboratory & clinical aspects):
Laboratory parameters are enlisted separately for modern diagnosis that are translated from Vedic wisdom on signs and symptoms of diseases. These laboratory parameters are also being used for updating and documenting efficacy and safety of classical formulations that are widely used in the ailments of modern contexts of diseases. Pharmacognostical (macroscopic & microscopic), organoleptic & phytochemical analysis of medicinal plants from permitted lands in natural flora to compare with cultivated medicinal plants as organic farming in virgin lands are also being performed.
Another section in lab is also established to fulfill the norms of genuine cultivation practices of medicinal plants starting from soil test to the change in characteristics of growth of medicinal plants. The lab is also using for enhancing yield through supplementing fertility and bio availability of essential minerals incorporated with botanical research.
7) Field research (Genuine cultivation practices of medicinal plants):
Exploration of natural flora to identify medicinal plants all over India has been conducted for the genuine drug resources. Farmers near to the area who are doing organic cultivation are selected for cultivating as intercrop or as cash crops. Scope of sustainable harvesting, traditional post harvest management systems, traditional or tribal cultivation practices and existing commercial cultivation of medicinal plants are also being documented. National institutes, regional research institutes, NGOs, botanical survey of India and academic experts have also selected for concluding the plant identity during our field research.
8) Computerized research data component:
Developing softwares for protocols in the following aspects are being done.
a. Identification of medicinal plants.
b. Clinical approach in chronic cases with or without modern medicine (Vedic and integrated approach).
c. Treatment protocols and follow-up for integrated medical approach in acute illness or in emergency management.
d. Updating SOP with periodical developments on demand as per the directions of business (communications, logistics and managements).
e. Data collection from clinics, field and surveys.
f. Conclusions and statistics after group discussions.
9) Publications on pharmaco-therapeutics:
a. Plant based, classical formulation based and disease based publications are primarily emphasized.
b. Endangering or rare Sanskrit treatises in Ayurveda are selected for publications with commentaries with special reference to critical topics on disease management systems of ancient India.
c. Manuscriptology.
